Are you in the front row?

We were at a July 4th parade one day when I realized that getting in the front row is important. It brought me back to my childhood:
Back in the Philippines when we were growing up, school, town, civic organization parades frequent the streets throughout the year. Whenever we get the date and time for the parade, I would make sure I’d run to where I could see the floats and to make sure I’d have the perfect spot to grab candies that they give away. I remember myself being aggressive along with the rest of my childhood buddies when it comes to grabbing candies (and more candies). I also made sure that I get the most candies than anyone else. It was the competitive side of me.
At the most recent parade, we stood close to the curb. I saw some kids catching candies – some grabbing – and even a few screaming for the parade participants for some “Candies here! Candies here!” But it was that young boy who was standing right in front of everybody else who got the most candies! No – he wasn’t any different from anyone. He was waiting and waiting for the marchers in the parade to go by. But what made him get (receive) more candies than any other kids standing at his back was that he was right there – right in front of everybody else.
In life, in order to get ahead – we must be like that boy. We must make sure we get in the front row. Almost all the time when you are in the front row, you get all the benefits.
However, getting in the front is another story.
For that boy, he wiggled his way around the crowd – using his charm and his baseball cap with a huge B on it. (Boston, be strong!)
